This song was written by the American old-time singer, songwriter, and banjo player Ola Belle Reed, one of the most important and influential figures in old-time music. Reed’s cousin, Hugh Campbell, recorded a version that received less recognition but inspired the guitar playing on this track. The song depicts a person who leaves the love of their life
behind to pursue worldly pleasures and wealth. They return to find that the love they left has died. The narrator is struck by the gut-wrenching realization that all the external wealth in the world cannot buy love.
