This song started in the southern Scotland border lands and dates back to a long tradition of balladry collected from the Anglo-Scottish border. Mike Tod learned it from Ramblin’ Jack Elliot who said it was popular in the American rodeo circuit during the 1940s. The song presents a series of devastating vignettes which at first glance appear unconnected, yet there are twisted, sinuous themes of displacement, restless-ness, and homelessness that tie them together. The arrangement that appears on this record is haunting and cinematic. Shrieking violin lines build in intensity and evoke visions of an Alfred Hitchcock horror film.
