about

This song is part of a song family that includes “Hicks’ Farewell” and “Turtle Dove.” Its origins date back to the broadside pamphlets of Scotland and England in the 1700s. These pamphlets were given out or sold to workers like sheep herders, horse-handlers, and milkmaids who would post the lyrics on the walls of dairies, stables, and barns to learn as they worked. Although it is usually played in old-time circles as a waltz, it appears in common 4/4 time on this album. The sparse arrangement produces a wide and eerie soundscape. The song is ultimately about the promise to be true to a lover. One person goes away, and the story is told through exchanges between the couple.

lyrics

As time draws near my dearest dear, and you and I we must part
How little you know ‘bout the pain and woe in my poor aching heart
‘Tis but I suffer for your sake, believe me dear it’s true
Oh, I wish that you were staying here, or I was going with you

And I wish my breast were made of glass where in you might behold
That upon my heart your name lies wrote in letters made of gold
In letters made of gold my love, believe me when I say
Oh, that you are the one that I’ll adore until my dying day

For the blackest crow that ever flew would surely turn to white
If ever I proved false to you bright day would turn to night
Bright day would turn to night, my love, the elements they’d moan
Oh, if ever I prove false to you the seas would rage and burn

about

Mike Tod Canmore, Alberta

Mike Tod is a wry and raspy tenor that sings well-worn traditionals, researches their roots, and sets a precedent for a sound that is both rooted in history and relevant to the present day. Told through a cinematic lens, he spins old songs into brooding epics that evoke the weathered landscapes of a western noir. ... more
